There are complications that are painful but somehow can be managed with medications; i am not concerned with that. I am worried about the symptoms that are more complicated and potentially life threatening.
If you are diabetic, you have a high risk to get a heart attack, amputation, and Alzheimer. And with the current trends, the incidence to suffer from these deadly problems is only increasing.
So, what are we doing wrong?
Do we need to see things in different perspective?
or, the information to manage diabetes is incomplete?
Knowing the Right Parameters
Well, I think there is something seriously wrong with how we look at our blood sugar levels.

I met one diabetic patient who was very excited about is HBA1c results. I had a brief conversation with him which I am going to share with you.
So let’s call this person Rajat
Me: Hi, how are you doing?
Rajat: i am doing well, I have got my Hba1c results and it’s 7.8; such a relief as I was struggling with it badly
Me: congratulations, but these are not the numbers to get satisfied with. You are in a good risk to develop the complications in future.
Rajat: what are you talking about? Even the doctor was very happy with results; he didn’t warn me about the complications.
Me: Well, there is a research on this subject which tells that if you are in 7% A1C or above zone you will surely get neuropathy issues.
And with those numbers, damage to your internal organs also starts.
You are very young now, you will be having a long life, try to target lower levels to avoid diabetes complications in your old age.
Rajat: True, so what range should I focus on?
Me: Try to avoid any spikes above 140 level, that would be good.
In long run, you should train yourself to achieve normal numbers.
Rajat: ok, thanks for the information. I will try to reduce my number further.
It’s nice meeting your Preet.
Me: It’s nice meeting you too.

The point from the above talk is that we are getting satisfied with the number which is not at all great. Even some doctors will congratulate you and will not aware you about the impending complications
Ultimately, you will get complacent with those number and think that the results are perfect with a little idea of damage going inside your body
In a study by DCCT, it was found that Type 1 diabetic who has achieved A1c of around 7% has far less risk of complication than those who had more than 7%
Same the case with Type 2 diabetic.
But if we compare the study of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, it was found that within 7% range type 2 diabetic is more vulnerable to get the complications.

But remember your long run goal should be to get numbers as close as normal. Try to track your blood sugar response to every food and do modification in your diet accordingly.
If you are dealing with insulin resistance, track your physical activity and develop habit to exercise daily.
